Write about your dream home.
We all know that saying, “Home is where the heart is.” We daydream about a physical space that embodies all things and people we hold dearest. Instinctively we do not think of a home as someone that holds your heart but a shelter that provides comfort and warmth.
If you are fortunate enough to share a warm and comforting shelter with those that hold your heart, you are truly blessed.
Personally my dream home comes in phases. I am in my second phase dream home that was designed by myself and my fiance. Everything about this home is custom to the land and our lifestyle. With kids 8-14 who need independence yet we still want to feel close to the family, with two active dogs, and land in a rural town in the woods… we chose a Chalet with a long driveway.
Our dream home provides an open floor plan to capture as many moments as we can together before the kids move into their full independence. It also hosts the kids rooms upstairs with their own bathroom and a loft for extra space. The first floor has cathedral ceilings in the living room and dining room that is met by a gable wall full of windows and large 4 panel sliding doors. The doors open to a large deck overlooking 4 acres of our land. Plenty of space inside and out for family activities.
Aside from family as the motivator I also wanted easy to clean and efficient. We chose simple finishings to avoid lots of nooks and crannies you need special focus on to clean. We have LOTS of insulation and 3 heating sources. Our 2400 sqft house costs less to heat and for electric than our 1800 sqft house did. Knowing we could put money and attention into the efficiency details was a huge selling point for us to build. We spent a small fortune in insulation, but the sound barriers are great and we know we do not have air leaks that run up our heating and electric costs.
To add to our efficiency we chose multiple lighting sources by room regardless of the open space. This allows us to have the whole open space lit or only sections without needing lamps.
Our dream home is a functional space that also provides beauty and efficiency.

Our home in difference phases and views. We cleared a lot of land this summer and graded the slopes to keep water away from the foundation. We have perimeter drains, but with a stream by the house we did not want to take our chances. We sloped the land towards the right of these photos where we plan to have a pond and natural feeding area for wildlife.
